Red River Zoo

Last summer, I took photos at the Red River Zoo. These are the folks that used my photos last year for the calendar, so I took some extra time to play and focused more on the photography than on the resting briefly on the drive to Winnipeg. They had set a deadline of July 15th for a photo contest to determine what would be used in their calendar this year. After I told them that I couldn't hit that, they extended it to the end of August.

Due to some personal life things, I missed that deadline too and figured that I missed it entirely. Then I got an email asking about them... right when my work schedule was going insane. That deadline was 10/31, and I managed to shift just enough work around to get the photos processed in time. Today I got an email from the Development Coordinator that said simply...

"My god Josh! Your photos are amazing!" which helped turn my mood right around (hard day at work).

She was talking about this set.

I like the drop of water from when I surprised him drinking.

I seem to be more interested in composition these days and less in portraiture.

The chicks were watching their mom really closely, learning to peck for bugs.

She's right.

Do you own a stuffed sloth?

Ew! Plush it is.

Austin is a great place to be a sloth.

Very cool! I already have this year's calendar up!

Ni kidding. Your photos ARE amazing. I looked at the whole set. My favorites are different than what you posted here. Going to have to be a five year calendar to include all those that deserve it.

I especially loved the red panda trying to look tough with those cute little ears and teddy bear features.

Hee! You found the grumpiest red panda in the world!

Once again, those are fantastic. No wonder the Dev. Co. was impressed.

In addition to the parent/baby walking away from camera (great composition), this is my other favorite:
