Happy DNA Day
Apr. 12th, 2007 04:42 pmThe first story is that dinosaurs are related to birds. You likely already knew that. What's particular interesting is that scientists have extracted actual protein chains from a T-Rex bone, and it matches closely the modern chicken.
In case you didn't get that the first time, Scientists have actual protein chains from a T-Rex. It's not DNA, but it's a lot closer than anything thought was possible.
Details here, there, everywhere, and way over here.
The second story is that we have now sequenced the rhesus macaque. Humans share 93% of the DNA with this guy, and 98-99% with chimps (though if I recall correctly, that last number has been questioned). The geeky-cool stuff is that the rhesus chromosomes have bits that have shuffled around in the past 25 million years, and no one knows why.
Details hither and yon
