Crocodiles!
Jun. 24th, 2010 03:36 pmCrocodiles are big. Wikipedia says "Larger species can reach over 4.85 metres (15.9 ft) long". But you don't really stop and think about just how freaking big these critters are. If you're like me, you just read the numbers and move on with life. How tall are you? I'm about 5'9" or so. That means that a crocodile could be almost as long as THREE OF ME! I don't fit into my bathtub. A crocodile wouldn't fit in my bathroom. Of course, that number only makes sense if you're me. Let's look at other common measurements.
Of course, you'll have to trust me on this. None of my fellow vacationers were willing to climb down and provide a sense of scale for this set.
( Highlights )
- Two large crocodiles would take up a similar length as a single school bus.
- Laid end-to-end, it would take just over 22 crocs to cover the length of an (American) football field
- If you went crocodile shopping at the local supermarket, you would need 6.36 shopping carts next to one another to get it to the checkout.
- Once you got it there, I would recommend scanning it with the hand-scanner. It would probably crush the conveyor belt.
- The island of Jamaica (apparently the most common unit of measurement of ice sheets) is 146 miles long. That's almost exactly 48,483 crocodiles.
- If a crocodile were traveling at 99% the speed of light, and you were standing still, it would appear to be only 2.24 feet long. If, however, you were in the same frame of reference, you would totally be eaten by a relativistic crocodile. (There are worse ways to go.)
- The spur winged plover is one of those birds that walks around in a crocodile's mouth picking out random things. They're about 190g. Crocodiles could weigh over 1,200 kg. Assuming that a bird can easily carry 10% of it's body weight, it would take over 63,000 plovers to carry off a crocodile!
