So, I have apparently hit an age of transition. In particular, I am living in a community where kids are going door to door soliciting money for school trips and I am old enough that my friends kids are hitting me up for donations to scouting and such.

I have no problem with the learning experience that kids go through in this process. However, I cannot, in good conscience, directly support the Boy Scouts of America nor do I have the time to research the moral/cultural standing of the various groups that approach me. Because of this, I have an idea that's a bit odd.

I am thinking of collecting a set of "give away" books. When these people approach me, I'll offer them a deal. If they take a book and come back to me in a week or two with a report, not on the book itself, but on what they've learned from the book, I'll give them money. They can choose whether or not apply that money to their cause.

Clearly, this would have to have age limits, but I am thinking of tiers like:

5-10 - two pages on "What you learned from this book and how it will help you in the next two years". - Worth $20

10-15 - five pages on "What you learned from this book and how it will help you today, five years from now and ten years from now" - Worth $50

15-20 - ten pages on "What you learned from this book and how it will help you after you graduate high school / college" - Worth $100

(Clearly, costs will have to be scaled based on my income and how often people come to me.)

So... what are your thoughts?

* Good idea or kinda creepy?
* If it's a good idea, are the tiers reasonable?
* If so, what books do you recommend for each tier?
