If you need cards this holiday and want to support conservation, consider The Red River Zoo.

They turned several of my photos into cards. I don't get any of the money (which is fine, 'cause I'd just give it back to the zoo), but it's a good cause so I thought some of you might want to know.

Wood Lake

Earlier this week, I took a long lunch and went to Wood Lake. I needed a bit of time outside so, even though it was a bit chilly, I did a quick walkabout. I took my camera but, to keep things light, only one lens. It was a macro lens and, once I got there, I wished I had a wide angle with me. However, I think the shots turned out nicely. (Set is here)

The ice had just formed on the lake. It was about one inch thick and had a quality to it that was beautiful. It's hard to capture the depth of ice in a two dimensional photograph, but it was one inch thick and you could see the water underneath as it moved bubbles around. It's hard to pick a favorite, as this sort of photography isn't something I do often, but I think it might be this one:

The Asian lady beetle was alive WELL past the time they usually die out, so I had the unusual chance to photograph one on ice. I like how you can see the slightly liquid water move around her leg as she walks across the ice.
