Update on the MandyCats
Dec. 29th, 2013 11:57 amI took the young kittencats to the vet a few weeks back for their annual checkups. They're fine. While we were there, though, the vet asked how the two MandyCats were doing, so we talked about that for a while. One thing she mentioned was the Sentry Calming Collar. I'd already committed to doing the Feliway oil pheremone releaser in that room and was doubtful that something else would really help, but I was at PetCo recently and picked one up anyway. My logic was that, since I'd be having a few people over to my house for the holidays, it would be good to reduce Minx's stress.
Of the two, Minx is far more skittish than Daniel, which is weird, because she was the first one to come out from under the bed. It took her about one week to come out in exchange for treats. It took Daniel two months. However, once he came out, he's stayed out. Minx got scared by the other cats several months ago and never really got back to exploring.
Anyway, they had some traumatic times, first with
lydy coming over to turn them into burritocats while I trimmed their claws, then when I had to hold Minx down and get the collar on her, then when my family and friends came over and made strange people noises at them as they hid under my bed.
Last night, Daniel and I played with little fuzzy sparkley balls until we ran out and he got spooked when I started collecting them for another round. He's rather gallumphy, having had a near-paralyzing injury years ago, but he really seemed to enjoy it.
Today, though, about two weeks after I got the collar on her, Minx jumped on my bed (I was sleeping in and had kicked the early rising kittencats out of the room) and got petted for about half an hour. Twenty minutes in, she started purring.
Now, you have to realize, for the first four months or so, they didn't make any noise at all. In the last two months, Daniel has been quite talkative, but Minx pretty much resorts to hissing. Until today, neither of them has purred at all.
It's taking a while, but they're turning back into cats.
