Owatona Reptile Zoo
Jan. 25th, 2012 07:13 pmLast Saturday, a group of us including
dd_b and
lydy went to the Reptile and Amphibian Discovery Zoo, which is a stupid name, 'cause they had birds too and a whole whackload of humans.
Anyway, remember that thing I used to do where I posted photos on the Internet?

Frilled Dragon - Photography is not amusing.

Plated Lizard (Gerrhosaurus major) - Remember how kids get pennies stuck up their nose sometimes? Plated lizard children get stuff stuck in their ears all the time. So if you ever need money for a can of soda, just shake one. You'll get at least 75 cents out of 'em.

African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis) - No joke here. These guys are REALLY hard to photograph, because they persist in being underwater and hidden under stuff. I'm pretty pleased with this one, just 'cause it's such a hard animal to get.

Uromastyx Lizard - I can't say anything cooler than this guy's name, so... Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx Uromastyx.

Chinese Tree Dragon - It's the year of these guys! (Pretty sure that means you should see at least one a day all year long.)

Mountain Horned Lizard (Acanthosaura capra) - It takes years of training to get the outer edge of your pupils to glow, but when you manage it, you can read in the dark.

Fire Salamander - You know what's hard to expose for? A black, shiny amphibian that's on fire... that's what.

Fire Salamander - Their preferred prey is the coelacanth, but they only have vomerine teeth and lack manometers and sphygmomanometers for hunting the benthic zone, so they mostly eat insects instead. Also, you are now prepared for tomorrow's vocabulary test.

Leopard Gecko - Leopard geckos exhibit opportunistic hunting behaviours, adapting to their habitat, finding likely targets and successfully selling them car insurance.

Poison Dart Frogs - Right before I took this photo, the blue frog had passed the other frog a bribe.

Caiman - The slit pupil that many crocodillians exhibit has no evolutionary advantage other than it makes them look evil.

Nile Crocodile - See? EVIL.

European Legless Lizard - If you're happy, and you know it... oh.

American Toad - American toads vote out of a sense of duty, but aren't thrilled by the choices.

And I'm reminded that I really need to be more careful keeping track of what I'm photographing. Mind you, I knew that at the time, but just couldn't be bothered, so I dunno that thinking about it now will help any. Shooting flash complicates it; with available light it's easy to grab a shot of the label just before I start working on the creature.
