Seriously, that's a starling? Why are the only starlings I ever see a dirty brownish black with just a touch of iridescence?

They're native (mostly) to Europe, Africa and Asia. The ones we have here came with the colonists and were the boring kind they have in England.

These were the commonest starlings around my grandparents' farm in the Rift Valley, and there are other similarly glossy species common in other parts of East Africa. The ones common (or, these days, not so common) in England are decidedly drab by comparison...

Because it's a farm, and the only way we'd notice was if the front yard dirt was a different color from the backyard/courtyard dirt.
