Why weren't you allowed to keep your salmon?

I have eaten so much salmon, both raw and cooked, in my life that it would be wrong to be squeamish about going from live fish to food, but I would definitely want a humane end for that transition.

The three we caught were from populations that have already been harvested to the limit. The government monitors and tags salmon to make sure that it's reasonably sustainable.
