Minnesota Zoo
Apr. 20th, 2008 10:51 amI've taken two short trips to the Minnesota Zoo recently. There aren't a lot of photos, but if you are interested, the sets are here and here. Highlights from both follow:

Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) - The previous nest was empty and falling apart... I blame the sub-prime mortgage crash.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) - The feathers serve to insulate the bird from the elements. You can tell this two ways. First, the snow on the feathers is not melting. Second, the eagle is not dead from exposure.

Snow on Branch - This tree is gathering snow, so that when you walk under it, it can drop it down the back of your shirt. Trees don't much care for people.

Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) - You can see the patterning better in black and white.

Nicobar Pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) - This bird is described as "mainly metallic green with green and copper hackles on the neck", which implies that they can be melted down to make ethernet cables. However, I somehow doubt that anyone attempting such would be successful.

Lesser Flamingo (Phoenicopterus minor) - I like the colours here.

Duck as Planet - According to relativity (the general one), gravity is due curves in spacetime caused by objects with mass. Ducks have mass, and therefore have gravity. When the ducks move, this causes ripples in spacetime. Unlike the waves in the water, a duck's gravitational waves are too small to measure. That's OK, 'cause water ripples are prettier anyway.

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) - There are surprisingly few blinking eagle photos on the web. This is my attempt to rectify the situation.

Wolverine (Gulo gulo) - Unlike dogs, wolverines can climb up trees. Unlike cats, they can also climb down.
