McIntosh Woods - birds, snail, muskrat

I visited McIntosh Woods a few weeks, and just got around to posting the photos to Flickr. There is a short boardwalk that goes out over a marsh. In the summer, it's a good place to see dragonflies. No dragonflies on this visit (I was too early), but I got some nice ones of a bird fishing. (Set is here, but I'm posting it all below.)





Bird - He's fishing!


Bird - Caught something. Check out the claws on the feet.


Bird - "I has a fish!"


Bird - "Today's in-flight NOM will be minnow."


Red Wing Blackbird - I just like the composition here.


Red Wing Blackbird - 'King of the Hill' is lonely when no one else wants to play.


Red Wing Blackbird - Blurry, but I like the wing.


Bird - This is a clearer shot of the bird from earlier, for identification purposes.


Emo Table - I tried to stop it, but by the time I realized what was going on, emo table had jumped and was sinking below the waves. Life is hard.


Snail - For some reason, it never crossed my mind the snails swam upside down.


Muskrat - Look! A mammal!

I've never seen a red-winged blackbird before! The ones that argue at my birdfeeder are all black.

Well, I finally got a moment to look at your bird. I would say that it is unmistakably a female red-winged blackbird, but I can't find any indication that they fish. I still think that's what your bird is, though.

I'm still very puzzled by the fishing, though a species that eats dragonflies could certainly eat a fish of that size, I suppose.

Maybe the fish caught a dragonfly at the same time that the blackbird went after it. Maybe she didn't realize that she had a fish instead until she landed.

Then again, maybe she has just acquired a taste for sushi.
