Snaps - Winnipeg Folk Festival

So, every year, I go to this little event call the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Every year it's different. Every year, however, I hear wonderful music, spend time with wonderful people, and gain several private memories that will stay with me forever.

This year, however, I had a camera.

I did not use my fancy camera, choosing to make due instead with my little camera that I use for snaps. It's greatly limited compared to my normal one, but it does have the advantage that it's easier to hide the fact that I'm taking pictures. This small benefit, combined with some truly fantastic light that Friday, has resulted in the set that you will find here. Please note that these are very different from what I usually do. Those of you wanting to see cute animals will be disappointed (unless you head over to National Geographic to look at a baby elephant).

They are not crisp. They are not as well composed as I would like. There are no funny captions. The subjects are not identified (except for kalikanzara, who knows who she is ;). Instead, these photos show (in my opinion) individuals in their own private worlds. I consider myself lucky to have been able to snap these images.

Those are great faces, I like these photos a lot.

But, I have to say, that baby elephant is the cutest thing! It looks like a cartoon elephant.

So weird to see everyone at WFF looking more like drowned rats than lobsters.

(See, you *did* take animal shots after all!)

It took me *days* to realize that you meant "lobsters" as "sunburnt". I was trying to equate baggies to carapaces, figure out why they'd be blue/green (the colour of most lobsters that *I* see), or how one could play guitar with claws.

I, apparently, need significantly more sleep than I've been getting.

Hey, we have a six-month-old baby elephant at the National Zoo!

I should pay more attention to things. I always thought I'd like to go to WFF some time, but I see you have to walk on grass.

I need to take a trip to the National Zoo some year. If that's near where you are, do you have any idea how many days I should dedicate to it? (For reference, as a first time visitor, I would need two days to do the Minnesota Zoo justice.)

And yes, the WFF involves a lot of walking and a lot of grass.

To really take pictures, at least four days. It's a big zoo and there are a lot of open exhibits where there are lots of places to get pictures.

I can't do the zoo, but if you come, I can come in to DC and meet you for lunch or something -- there's other fans here, too. Did you meet Steven Desjardins at Minicon this year? I don't know if you know the others.

I keep telling the doctors I need an all-terrain wheelchair for this kind of thing, but they keep saying I'll use it too often. I won't, I prefer to walk when I can, but I can't convince them.

I ran into a bit in the WashPost about the FONZ (Friends of the National Zoo) Photo Club. You probably don't want to join them, but they have newsletters and such online which might give you ideas.

Yep, damp and windy. It was also about 15 degrees cooler than it usually is. No one was really prepared for that.
