Red River Zoo - Crabs, Frogs and Lizards

The last of my Red River Zoo set.




Fiddler Crab (Uca speciosa) - Disco crab is happy it's Saturday night.


Fiddler Crab (Uca speciosa) - I honestly expected our alien overlords to look, well, more like us, really.


African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis) - In reading about these guys, I ran across this "there was a brief spate of excitement around this frog when it was determined that urine from a pregnant human female would cause an unmated African Clawed Frog to lay eggs". Can anyone explain just how that was discovered?


Surinam Horned Frog (Ceratophrys cornuta) - They say the eye is the window to the soul. Frogs have issues.


Panther Chameleon (Chamaelo pardalis) - I never realized how cute their hands were.

The whole of the Panther Chameleon is cute if you ask me. That one horizontal white strip is interesting.

I do love your photographs, and the captions always make me giggle. What I find most interesting, I guess, is your consistency. Your music festival photos are quite similar to your non-human-animal photos. I don't have a name for the similarity, just that you're good at capturing naked, revealing faces of all sorts. I really appreciate that.

You know, fish have a horizontal organ that enables them to determine micro gradients in water pressure. That's why many fish have a stripe along their side. Given that lizards evolved from fish, I wonder if there is a relation there.

I'm glad to hear that I have a style. The few times I take photos of people, I tend to pretend that they're animals in a zoo, as doing portrait work is a bit scary. I prefer to be either ignored or unnoticed, as I think it gives me a better chance of glimpsing reality.

I've noticed the stripe in fish, but never thought about what it was for.

Your photographs of people are painfully realistic. I'm not sure that I would want you to photograph me.
