Something you all might want to know

In the summertime, my brother and I would play outside. Late in the day, as the lengthening shadows crept out of the woods, the cicadas would start their deep thrumming song. Deep in the shrouded darkness behind the trees, it was easy to imagine the errant bear, wolf or cougar that had wandered by in search of young children to eat. The fear, imaginary though it was, was exhilarating and a very important part of growing up.
My family used to go on walks and bike rides through the forests and fields of Illinois. Occasionally, between bouts of brotherly bickering, my mother would point out a bobwhite quail or bald eagle. We'd all freeze and watch until they caught our presence and fled. The stillness of the unexpected was also a very important part of growing up.
Every year, we would travel. Sometimes it was to the East coast to visit family. Sometimes it was to the West coast to visit friends. Occasionally, we went to Colorado, Florida or the Carolinas. My parents made sure that we'd get to see things like sea turtles, crocodiles, manatees, sea otters and condors. The wonder of the new was amazing, the educational experiences impacted me more deeply than I would ever have thought.
I look forward to the day when I have kids of my own. To when I can watch them experience what I have, to when I can take them places to see the wonder of my past echoed in their eyes.
The only problem is that I won't be able to.
