So there's this zoo near Vancouver. It's OK. For some reason, none of the Canadian zoos I've been to are very photo friendly. There's a lot of chainlink fence that's difficult to shoot through and, frankly, many of the animals seem to be more lethargic than in US zoos. Maybe they're older? Maybe they're just more laid back (they ARE Canadian, after all ;) . In any case, the photos aren't as interesting as I'd like, but the set is here.

Coyote (Canis latrans)
Coyote (Canis latrans) - Coyote jokes are hilarious:

"So, a rabbit walks into a coyote bar. He hops up onto a nearby barstool and asked the bartender 'do you serve rabbits here?' The bartender says 'of course we do!'. The rabbit was delicious."

Well, OK, they're funny to coyotes.

Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) - Fetch is taken to new levels.

Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum)
Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum) - I've never seen one of these before. They weight up to 16kg. I can't believe that South American is populated with mutant superbunnies and I never knew it.

Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum)
Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum) - The pointer mara is great to take hunting... so long as you don't also take dogs along.

Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu)
Collared Peccary (Pecari tajacu) - Anyone who has ever read Mythago Wood is now fleeing from the screen.

Darwin's Rhea (Rhea pennata)
Darwin's Rhea (Rhea pennata) - "tweet"

Guanaco (Lama guanicoe)
Guanaco (Lama guanicoe) - The llama mob belatedly checks for a tail after the hit.

Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) - Baby white swans are grey. Baby black swans are grey. How do they know?

Black Swan (Cygnus atratus)
Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) - Love

American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber)
American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) - I am the scourge of the flamingos! FEAR ME!

giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)
giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) - Does this photo need a caption? Honestly?

The part of a giraffes tongue that can protrude from the mouth is around 12 inches long. The whole muscle is much longer.
I did a report in 6th grade.
I really really like the the llama caption.

the local zoo (Potter Park, Lansing MI) has patagonian maras (aka p. cavies). It got them from the Toronto Zoo after somebody's dogs snuck in and killed the ones they had.
