San Antonio Zoo - March 2010
Nov. 7th, 2012 11:01 amIn March 2010, I took a mental health trip to get away from my job and the Winter for a while. My friend Cat in Austin, TX offered to give me a place to stay and it was lovely. In addition to seeing someone I hadn't seen in far too long, I wanted to visit the local zoos. The Austin zoo has been mentioned previously, but one day was spent on San Antonio.
The San Antiono zoo was interesting in that it felt like a smaller Phoenix zoo, but with some animals that I had never seen before. I was, sadly, again thwarted in my attempt to get good photos of a kinkajou. Critters that like to sleep during the day are tricky. However, I did achieve my life long dream of getting to see a gavial (best crocodilian ever). I did not get to feed it, but I have hopes that I'll get the opportunity some other time. I remember reading about the gavial in the World Book encyclopedia when I was probably 7 and thinking it was awesome. Around 30 years later... it's still awesome.
The set is here. My favorite, of course, is the gavial.

Gavials look awesome even when they're under the water.

Orinoco Crocodile - I actually hadn't heard of these guys until I was at the zoo.

Nor the Tomistoma

Tomistomas have awesome eyes.

I'm seeing more golden headed lion tamarins in zoos lately. I guess some breeding program somewhere is working out well.

White pelicans are much prettier than the brown ones.

When my big orange cat does this, he's about to capture a little fuzzy sparkley ball. Not sure what pelicans pounce on.

I like cormorants, partly because they look like dinosaurs, but mostly because they are in the process of stealing an evolutionary niche from ducks and geese and are the current underdogs. I have high hopes for them though.

This is the best shot I got of the kinkajou. It is, however, better than the total absence of shots I got in Costa Rica and at the Austin zoo.

This is my friend Cat. She likes slothes.

She really likes slothes.

You know, when she's awake and stuff.

This is a babirusa, also known as a pig deer. Until I saw it, I had no idea that these things even existed. They're apparently elusive critters. This one went out of view as I was shooting, so I only got two quick shots.

High school. It never ends.
