I saw Pan's Labyrinth a week back or so. A few comments below the cut that might be spoily. However, I've also just listened to the NPR interview with the director. If you've seen the movie, you might find that interesting as well.

Unlike many others, I chose to view the story as completely true. In other words, I feel that the girl was really the princess, and when she "died", she actually did transition. Apparently, this interpretation is unusual, but for me, allowed me to view it as having a happy ending.

I was not expecting subtitles, and like [livejournal.com profile] leiacat, I found that the subtitles got in the way of my aversion response to dealing with the squicky bits. Also, like [livejournal.com profile] leiacat, I was bothered by Ophelia getting a second chance after she blew the second challenge. However, I am viewing that as the result of a father's love. However, it did bother me that they never explained why the princess ran away in the first place.

Like others, I was bothered at the movie was titled "Pan's Labyrinth" instead of "The Labyrinth of the Faun", which would have been more direct. Apparently, the problem was not in translating "faun" from Spanish to English, but from Spanish to the other international languages, so they kept the translated title the same for marketing reasons. Seems weak to me, but I can accept it.

All in all, I liked it, and I'll likely get it on DVD. However, I doubt I'll watch it very often due to the gore.
