Locomotion:
The sole of the foot is soft and wide to cushion the legs and help spread the animal's weight. Even though the elephant is so large, the combination of legs and feet allow it to move quietly and with great agility (especially when climbing in mountainous areas). They are not able to actually run or jump, but they can amble up to 25-30 mph.
Yep, if you're on a safari with me, the following conversation would now be likely to ensue:
You: Look out! That herd of elephants is running this way!
Me: Actually, elephants legs are structured to support their weight but this prevents them from running.
You: Are you nuts! They're going to trample us and stab us with their tusks!
Me: Actually, they are more likely to knock us out by swinging their tusks at us as they amble at up to 30 mph.
You: *blink* *blink* *blink*
You: *run away*
Me: *squished by rapidly ambling elephant*
I'd never survive in the wild.
