Monarch tag

I’ve long wanted to see a monarch tag in the wild. I was truly fortunate that this tag happened to be attached to a living butterfly.

How cool!

I've seen an IMAX movie Flight of the Butterflies, about Dr. Fred Urquhart, who founded the project to trace the monarchs' migration route back to their winter home. It's amazing that he managed to enlist so many amateur butterfly taggers, when his only means of outreach were newspaper ads and word of mouth. He also had to devise tags that would stick to the butterflies without injuring them or hampering their flight.

But I've never seen an actual tagged butterfly.

I've seen tagged butterflies before ... but I was the one who tagged them, so it's hard to consider them legitimate sightings.

Being able to catch a butterfly and tag it is really cool!

In summer and fall, there are monarch tagging events pretty much all over the midwest. You should join a tagging party.

were you able to report its whereabouts, or is that not part of tagspotting?

Yep, I reported it. Never heard back though, so I don't know if they got it.
