Wow wow wow, is that a white bird with the color of the sky coming through, or a multi-colored bird?

It is actually both. Remember that feathers don't have pigment. If you backlight them, they have no colour of their own, so since the sky is blue and the feathers are "white" or "fully transmissive", they show up as blue when backlit.

At least, that's my interpretation.
