Henry Doorly Zoo - Parrots, Budgies, Monkey, Prairie Dog

Continuing highlights from my recent zoo set.




Parrot - Unsure what type of parrot this is, but it certainly seems to know good lighting.


Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) - Check out the eyelash things


Military Macaw (Ara militaris) - General Chirpy is planning an invasion of the next branch. It requires careful deliberation.


Spider Monkey (Ateles ?) - A trip to the zoo isn't nearly as exciting when you live there.


Black-tailed Prairie Dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) - They escaped years ago. This is in the park near the zoo, and half a mile away from their enclosure.


Baby Peafowl - Proud as a peacock... practicing.


Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) - "I has a home."


Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) - "I likes my home."


Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) - "Go 'way, is MY home."


Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) - "Dammit! No solicitors!"

I love that the prairie dogs escaped!

I do too. It makes sense, given that Nebraska used to be prairie, but it's still funny when you're walking around and go "hey, that's not a squirrel!"

It also shows how fragile and artificial zoos are. I wonder if they get into people's yards--that would be annoying.

Hee. I thought you were just pulling our legs and that was part of the prairie dog enclosure.

I'm glad they really got out.

That's understandable. I do tend to stretch the truth a bit in my comments. :)

When I was at that zoo, there were old men with thier grand kids, frowning and swearing at the prarie dog enclosure. There was a bounty on them. Might still be one in the western part of the state.

There used to be bounties on prairie dogs, but I'm pretty sure that each species is now protected under the Endangered Species Act.
